Mt. Blanca Fudge Company
Terri Sanders has opened Mt. Blanca Fudge Company in Blanca. The shop, located in the historic old post office building at Main Street and Broadway, sells 24 kinds of fudge with more specialty fudge flavors during various seasons. Sanders has common fudge types such as chocolate pecan, dark chocolate and rocky road, but she also has exotic flavors such as root beer, cappuccino, bubblegum, apple pie and jalapeño.
For Valentines Day, the shop will feature raspberry swirl fudge and red velvet fudge. For Saint Patricks Day, Sanders will make key lime fudge. Sanders features a new flavor each month. By Valentines Day, she will have sugar-free fudge available.
Sanders had a tea room which sold fudge in Pensacola Florida for 5 years. Situations brought her to Forbes Park, east of Fort Garland. For three years after arriving in the Valley, she sold fudge at the Alamosa Farmers Market and at craft shows around the Valley and in the Denver and Colorado Springs area.
Sanders said that friends took her for a ride and showed her a cute little building in Blanca. Since two fudge stores had closed in Alamosa and people had been asking Sanders if she had a shop anywhere, she decided that building would be a good choice for a new business. Sanders went back to Florida and brought all of her stored equipment to Blanca including her ovens and display cases.
Sanders opened Mt. Blanca Fudge Company early in December 2013. She has added homemade cookies, homemade breads, and breakfast muffins to her selection. In the summer, Sanders is going to be adding picnic tables outside the store and serving light lunches including wraps, barbecue sandwiches and soups, cold drinks and hand-dipped ice cream. She will also have free wifi for customers.
The shop also features local crafts including vests, potholders, and towels that reflect the Valley. Mt. Blanca Fudge Company is open Friday through Monday from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. Hours will be extended in the summer.
